"What we've seen is deposit pressures escalate more than previously anticipated," said Alexander Yokum, analyst at CFRA Research, who has a neutral view on regional banks. "A lot of these regional banks, they have less deposits, so if they lose deposits, it can really impact their operating results," Yokum said. "So, higher for longer, I think for a lot of regional banks, would be negative." Here's what Wall Street analysts expect from regional banks this season. A New York Community Bank stands in Brooklyn on February 08, 2024 in New York City. New York Community Bank , the regional lender that needed a $1 billion-plus lifeline last month, is offering the country's highest interest rate for a savings account. The standout rate could be a sign that NYCB is facing funding pressure, Tumin said. "It looks like they're trying really hard to attract deposits," Tumin said. The bank announced a capital injection from investors led by former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin's Liberty Strategic Capital on March 6.

Most of the banks deemed to be potentially challenged are community lenders with less than $10 billion in assets. These banks need to either raise capital, likely from private equity sources as NYCB did, or merge with stronger banks, Graham said. There are other signs of mounting stress among smaller banks. They ranged in size from $90 billion in assets to under $1 billion, according to Fitch. He predicts a surge in merger activity from lenders between $3 billion and $20 billion in assets as smaller firms look to scale up.

That's not to say predictions of a commercial real estate rebound are a sure bet. Here are four signs that support Gray's prediction that the commercial real estate market may be bottoming. (New York Community Bank had previously purchased $2.7 billion in Signature's loans and deposits, but not the real estate loans.) According to David Seifert, partner at private equity real estate firm Velocis, there are some sweet deals to be had in secondary sales of private-equity funds tied to real estate. Mnuchin rebornNine months after President Joe Biden was inaugurated and Mnuchin left the Treasury Building, Mnuchin formed a new private equity group, Liberty Strategic Capital. Steven Mnuchin's private equity firm made a $450 million investment in New York Community Bank last week. When Mnuchin left CIT less than two years later, he received a $10.9 million severance package. “It’s a great business and I’m going to put together a group to buy TikTok,” Mnuchin told visibly stunned anchors on CNBC Thursday morning. Mnuchin may be the founder and managing partner of Liberty Strategic Capital, but Saudi Arabia is reportedly covering a big chunk of his firm’s tab.

New York CNN —Former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Thursday he’s assembling a team of investors to make a bid to buy TikTok. “It’s a great business and I’m going to put together a group to buy TikTok,” Mnuchin told CNBC Thursday morning. Even though TikTok is likely unprofitable, “it’s worth a lot of money,” he added. Mnuchin, though, said he’s looking to find a solution where the Chinese government will allow TikTok to be sold without a technology transfer. Even if that happens, any kind of TikTok ban would likely be fought in courts.

But where banks' exposure to commercial real estate is concerned, locating that fire may be difficult. Rising interest rates quickly increased the cost of borrowing for investors in commercial real estate, including offices and multifamily homes. It doesn't reveal details such as borrowers' track records, said Mark Hillis, a former chief risk officer for commercial real estate at JPMorgan. There's also varying concentration risk: the largest banks with commercial real estate exposure are more diversified, meaning that any losses won't be as devastating, Baker said. "We think very few banks will run into issues just from their commercial real estate exposure," Reidy said.

Ultimately, it’s very high leverage,” Tomasz Piskorski, a finance professor at Columbia Business School, tells me. Even a year after that exact thing happened — Silicon Valley Bank failed after depositor demand eclipsed the value of its assets — regulators haven’t addressed the core leverage issue. The most obvious answer is one the banking industry hates: Increase the amount of money a bank is required to hold in reserve. And their go-to argument against such regulations is that they force banks to curtail loans to customers, hurting folks in the real economy. The upshot: Despite the banking industry’s protest, banks can handle much higher capital requirements (at least, according to Piskorski et al).

New York CNN —Wall Street was taken aback by the US labor market’s resilience in January. Another unexpectedly hot report could shake things up again. The January jobs report showed that the US economy added a stunning 353,000 jobs that month and the unemployment rate stayed at 3.7%. The new EU regulations force sweeping changes on some of the world’s most widely used tech products, including Apple’s app store, Google search and messaging platforms, including Meta’s WhatsApp. The broad obligations apply only to the EU, which could leave tech users in the United States and other markets looking longingly at some of the features Big Tech is rolling out in response to the European directive.

New York Community Bank said Thursday it lost 7% of its deposits in the turbulent month before announcing a $1 billion-plus capital injection from investors led by former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin's Liberty Strategic Capital. The bank had $77.2 billion in deposits as of March 5, NYCB said in an investor presentation tied to the capital raise. NYCB also said it's slashing its quarterly dividend for the second time this year, to 1 cent per share from 5 cents, an 80% drop. In a little more than a month, the bank changed its CEO twice, saw two rounds of rating agency downgrades and announced deepening losses. At its nadir, NYCB's stock sank below $2 per share Wednesday, down more than 40%, before ultimately rebounding and ending the day higher.

New York CNN —Customers of New York Community Bank (NYCB) pulled $6 billion worth of deposits between February 5 and March 5, leaving the bank’s deposit base 7% lower, at $77 billion. However, the pattern is not indicative of a bank run, which these days can drain a lender of funds in mere hours. Shortly ahead of its demise, depositors at Silicon Valley Bank tried withdrawing $42 billion in one day over fears they wouldn’t be able to access their funds if the bank failed. On Thursday’s call, NYCB also announced it’s slashing its dividend to one penny a share. Increasing both means the bank has fewer funds available to lend, which as a result would limit its profitability.

New York Community Bank, the midsize lender under pressure over its real estate loans and internal management, announced an overhaul on Wednesday that included more than $1 billion in emergency cash, the addition of former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to its board and the appointment of its third chief executive in a month. The investment of more than $1 billion includes cash from Mr. Mnuchin’s private equity firm, Liberty Strategic Capital, and Kenneth Griffin’s Citadel Global Equities, among others. The bank’s new chief executive, Joseph Otting, worked closely with Mr. Mnuchin in the past. He ran OneWest Bank, then owned by Mr. Mnuchin, for five years. He also oversaw the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, one of the banking industry’s primary regulators, during the Trump administration.

New York CNN —Shares of New York Community Bank (NYCB) plunged more than 40% Wednesday afternoon after The Wall Street Journal reported that the beleaguered regional lender is seeking a major cash infusion. Then last week, the bank said in a filing it had identified “material weakness” in the company’s controls. The issues caused a $2.4 billion loss to shareholders last quarter, NYCB said. The delay draws eerie parallels to First Republic Bank, which postponed reporting its quarterly earnings shortly before it failed last year. First Republic Bank similarly needed an emergency cash infusions not long before it collapsed.
